Ready For School

Stage 3: A realistic age to begin with stage 3 is (surprise!) age 3. It is, however, always essential to foster confidence first. Take the 3-minute quiz to find out which stage is best!

say no to mom guilt

Let’s collectively forgive each other and ourselves for not always enjoying playing with our toddlers and pre-schoolers. Yes, yes, we love them more than life itself and they really are brilliant little creatures – but they aren’t always fun to play with. I mean, how many cups of imaginary tea can one woman drink, people?! Let’s bring back the JOY.

milestone markers

Gone are the days of the public health nurse and the milestone cards telling us what to keep an eye out for. I mean, we all know that our child is the most incredible one to ever step foot on this earth – but we still want to witness and celebrate these exciting new milestones.

The flashcards give your child a chance to show you what he is interested in and which skills he is currently developing.

One of the greatest gifts from the In A Flash programme is truly witnessing visible growth in our children

what we want

We want to rock motherhood and score big wins – but we don’t want to force ourselves to be creative if we’re not in the mood or if it’s just not our thing.

We want to give our toddlers a head-start in life so that they can feel confident when we drop them off for their first day of kindergarten – but we don’t want to force them to follow instructions or play ‘the right way’.

We want more joy and deeper connections with our little ones – but we don’t want to feel like a bystander in their imaginative play.

I was pleasantly surprised because I really hadn’t intended to teach him these concepts and had hardly invested any effort into educational activities.

This is what I wanted and this is how I found it.

The difference between my two children couldn’t have been more drastic. When my bilingual boy started preschool at age 2, his teachers were amazed to see that Alexander knew the names of all the shapes, colours and numbers. I was pleasantly surprised because I really hadn’t intended to teach him these concepts and had hardly invested any effort into educational activities.

I took stock of what I had actually done with my little guy and it came down to my ‘cheat’. My lazy game of all things! What I did was an extension of the method I had been using intuitively throughout the years, all the way back to my babysitting club days in Canada.

I used the method to connect through a language barrier with my au pair kidlets (aged two and five) in Amsterdam and teach them English. I used the method to share learning concepts with a vertical group at the bilingual daycare. I used the method to welcome and interact with frightened pre-schoolers as they entered a new environment (for some, this was even a new country and new language). I used the method to help my husband teach our toddler son Dutch vocabulary when English was his stronger language. I even used the method with my adorable Sunday school group to incorporate movement into the lesson plans.

Powerful stuff. On accident. So, what was the method?

These were truly some of my best moments and I can still re-live the feeling of witnessing each of these little minds blossom and grow right before my eyes. Joy. Pure joy and no effort.

All I did was draw basic images on sheets of paper and place these impromptu flashcards throughout the space. Depending on the ages and stages of the child and their language, I scribbled animals, household items, numbers, colour blobs or even little faces to exercise their emotional intelligence. All that was left to do was sit back and give funny commands paired with loads of hints and praise. These were truly some of my best moments and I can still re-live the feeling of witnessing each of these little minds blossom and grow right before my eyes. Joy. Pure joy and no effort.

So, why now? Why launch this method into the wider world?

Well, aside from truly wanting to share this feel-good technique with others (which I have done on an informal level throughout the years), it was Madeleine’s turn to grow and I got a big wake up call.

They were an immediate hit and Madeleine soon found excitement in naming colours and counting to 10. I was so relieved to rediscover the joy of witnessing these milestones

By the time my little wild child came along, my business was booming. As the toddler years unfolded, our little girl was having fun but missing milestones and this really hit home.

My spicy little toddler was being cut short and I was flooded with guilt. The problem was two-fold: not enough time and too much temper – Madeleine is a force to be reckoned with. This kid could sniff out mommy’s intentions to tame her from a mile away and she resisted any educational activities and games I proudly presented to her (I have them ALL).

Until the cards. It all came flooding back to me – the cards, we need the cards!

They were an immediate hit and Madeleine soon found excitement in naming colours and counting to 10. I was so relieved to rediscover the joy of witnessing these milestones with my little gal and watching her puff with pride as she ran back and forth to her favourite colours and animals.

In a whirl of passion and enthusiasm, I decided to re-organise my life to ensure that the product was brought to the market. Well, it’s here. With the help of a fantastic network of amazing women, the method is now out there in the world and in your homes. Enjoy!

Kinesthetic learning – a complicated phrase for a resfreshingly simple concept.

Learning through movement.

Schools use three core learning styles to teach our children Auditory VisualKinesthetic. As children grow and become individuals, these styles branch out into their unique learning language.

Kinesthetic learning is often associated with one of its more commonly-known branch styles: tactile (hands-on) learning. Hands-on learning is an excellent method that is used by nearly all parents and early childcare facilities and includes everything from playing with pots and pans to beautiful learning philosophies such as Pikler and Montessori.

Kinesthetic learning is a lesser-known option and involves the child physically moving herself around the space to deeply reinforce core learning concepts during active play. It is, first and foremost, a bonding exercise that truly engages contact between parent and child. Looking at one another, laughing, listening and responding to cues – deep connections.

We think that kinesthetic learning deserves a more prominent place in the toolkits of amazing moms dedicated to loving and teaching their little ones every day.

A lifelong passion for learning begins in the earliest stages of childhood and is nurtured in the home. The In A Flash method harnesses the power of kinesthetic learning.

We call it the In A Flash method as a nod toward flashcards. They are, of course, flashcards – but we take it to the next level and incorporate the third component of the education triangle and get your little one moving to truly reinforce these concepts (while also having a blast and creating memories).
